Understanding Our Sedation Dentistry Options
For many people, the thought of visiting the dentist brings feelings of anxiety or nervousness. At our office, every patient deserves a calm, stress-free experience. That’s why we offer sedation dentistry—a safe and effective way to help you relax while receiving the care your smile deserves. Two of the most common options we provide are laughing gas sedation and oral sedation.
Laughing Gas Sedation
Also known as nitrous oxide, laughing gas is a gentle and time-tested way to ease dental anxiety. You’ll breathe the gas through a small mask placed over your nose, and within minutes, you’ll begin to feel calm, relaxed, and maybe even a little giggly—hence the name! You’ll remain awake and aware throughout your appointment, but the sights, sounds, and sensations of treatment won’t bother you.
Once your procedure is finished, the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly as you breathe regular oxygen, so you can safely drive yourself home afterward. Laughing gas is ideal for patients with mild dental anxiety, those undergoing routine procedures, or anyone who wants to take the edge off without lingering drowsiness.
Oral Sedation
For patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety or who need longer, more complex treatments, oral sedation may be a great choice. This method involves taking a prescribed medication—usually in pill form—shortly before your appointment. The medication helps you feel deeply relaxed and calm, and in some cases, you may even drift into light sleep during your procedure.
Because oral sedation can leave you drowsy for several hours, you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. However, most patients find that their visit feels short and comfortable, with little to no memory of the procedure.
Which Option Is Right for You?
Sedation dentistry isn’t just for people with dental anxiety—it’s also beneficial for patients with a strong gag reflex, sensitive teeth, or difficulty sitting still. During your consultation, our team will discuss your health history, comfort level, and treatment needs to recommend the best type of sedation for you.
At our office, your comfort is our priority. With safe and personalized sedation options, we make it easier than ever to relax, feel at ease, and smile with confidence.
